Introduction
" Nexus " : 1. A connection or series of connections linking two or more things.
2. A central or focal point.

From a public void to a lively public living room; Cuban Havana is lacking such a transformation to be executed to its largest public square “Plaza de la Revolución” to bring it back to life. A great history, a rich heritage and a distinctive architectural legacy represent Havana's identity that`s manifested in the beauty of the Cuban Square. However, this landmark was altered by time to an obsolete area with no "proper function" than just an aesthetical background for some classic pictures. Hence, competition aimed to create a design proposal that could revitalize the plaza to be a place for community life and social interaction.
Consequently, “Nexus” design intervention contributes to reflecting the city's identity on the people through the all-day ongoing activities in the square; it motivates them to contribute to make their habitat a better place.
Concept
" The plaza traces Havana's identity features and converges them all into one main heart. These identity traces get exposed out of the heart for an emphasis and then are reflected on Havana`s citizens through encouraging social interaction and culture exchange."
Approach
" To revitalize the square by connecting different identity trails in one main focal point that contributes in creating a better Havana."
Form Generation
A lively dynamic grid is intersected by a linear grid inspired by Havana`s original urban grid as an attempt to maintain its identity yet highlighting the impact of the heart on the whole plaza.
Sustainability and Functionality
Many aspects were taken into consideration when it came to designing the square regarding multipurpose use as well as sustainable elements for a better Havana.

The different zones in the plaza show the versatile functions.
The Helix
Going up the helix through the heart of the plaza whilst framing Havana's landmarks creates a one of a kind experience.
The community zone with its interactive and fun furniture, on the other hand the display zone which takes the user on a cultural tour where they get to know Havana with its rich layers.
The quiet zone shows the beauty of Havana's nature and allows the users to relax and meditate. Finally the heart where the users gather to enjoy Havana's music and entertaining performances.
